SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA – Nearly 72 hours after a contractor working on the site of the former Kaier Brewery noticed the abandoned building twisting and debris falling to the ground, the building located on North Main Street began to be knocked down Thursday afternoon. LUZERNE COUNTY, PA – On Sunday, August 28, 2016, the Nuremberg-Weston Volunteer Fire Company gathered at its station on Hazle Street between Nuremberg and Weston to celebrate two milestones.  The first was 30 years of service to the community after the merger of the Nuremberg Fire Company and the Weston Fire Company.  The second milestone was the housing of Tanker 585. A fire apparatus parade kicked off the celebration at 2PM that included fire companies from Columbia, Luzerne and Schuylkill Counties and traveled through Weston, Nuremberg, Fern Glen and Rock Glen before returning to the station. SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA – 52 years ago, three men became trapped underground in a coal mine in Sheppton.  Those men, David Fellin, Henry Throne and Louis Bova were trapped in a mine off Schoolhouse Road.  Two of the men, Fellin and Throne, were found to be alive and a rescue effort soon began.  The event gained national attention as this was the first rescue attempt of its kind.  A borehole was used in an attempt to rescue the miners.  After two long weeks, the two men were brought to the surface.  Unfortunately, Louis Bova was never recovered.  As a result … Continue reading →
